EU strengthens digital forensics capacity in Uzbekistan

  • Thematic Component: 2. Improvement of Detection Capacities
  • Country: Uzbekistan

From June 3 to 5, the Border Management Programme in Central Asia (BOMCA 10), funded by the European Union (EU) held a national workshop in Uzbekistan on the use of digital forensics software.

As technology advances, crimes involving digital devices are becoming increasingly common - from online fraud and cybercrime to threats to national security. To effectively address these challenges, law enforcement agencies require specialised knowledge in digital forensics. This was the focus of the three-day training, which brought together specialists working in digital intelligence, evidence collection and mobile device forensics. Under the guidance of experts from the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service, participants learned how to use modern software tools for extracting, analysing and interpreting digital data in criminal investigations. The programme combined theoretical modules with practical sessions. Participants learned to navigate forensic software interfaces, connect iOS and Android devices, perform various types of data extractions, analyse reports and identify key digital evidence, including deleted or remote data.

A special emphasis was placed on independent work. Over the course of three days, participants extracted and analysed data from devices under experts’ supervision, receiving feedback and practical guidance to strengthen their skills. The training concluded with a final session to assess knowledge and reflect on the results. Such initiatives help build the capacity of national institutions in the field of digital forensics and support the integration of modern investigative methods into the daily operations of Uzbekistan’s law enforcement agencies.
