  • Thematic Component: 3. Facilitation of Trade
  • Country: All region, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan

From 27 to 29 May, the EU-funded Border Management Programme in Central Asia (BOMCA 10) organised a study visit to Latvia for specialists from agencies involved in phytosanitary and veterinary border controls from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The visit aimed to enhance institutional capacities in line with EU practices by sharing advanced models of import control at border checkpoints. Hosted by the Food and Veterinary Service (FVS) and National Customs Board (NCB) of Latvia, the programme provided detailed insights into Latvia’s inspection systems, training frameworks and the IMSOC information system. Practical sessions took place at the “Patarnieki” border crossing and the “Freeport of Riga”, highlighting interagency cooperation and day-to-day implementation of EU import procedures. Specialised site visits included the state research institute - BIOR and State plant protection service of the National phytosanitary laboratory, further reinforcing cross-sector knowledge exchange. The study tour concluded with discussions, reflections and certification of participants.

This study tour to Latvia was organised within the Component 3, “Facilitation of Trade”, which aims to further support the regional economic integration process.
